Illinois Independent Living Center and Katharine Manor Apartments
is a non-profit housing program which offers barrier-free, wheelchair accessible housing and optional personal attendant (PA) services for people who are physically disabled, but able to live independently (please see "Personal Attendant Services Program" below). IILC/KM is not a nursing home, assisted living or a medical model, but an alternative to all of these! IILC/KM is a 501(c)3 tax exempt housing organization which organized, built, and manages Katharine Manor Apartments, which provides persons and families with mobility disabilities of long, continued and indefinite duration, the opportunity to live independently in their own apartment (or condominium).
People with physical disabilities have freedom here--freedom to make their own choices, for their own needs, in their own residences. When people are disabled they (and family) often lose these basic freedoms of choice and cannot imagine an independent future. IILC/KM is a housing option that promotes an independent lifestyle through its wheelchair accessible architectural design, optional Personal Attendant (PA) services and convenient location to access the community and its opportunities (below). |

Personal Attendant (PA) Services
To live independently at IILC/KM means that the resident with a disability is either able to physically care for themselves or direct someone else to help with their physical needs. This PA Program provides personal attendants to perform ADLs (activities of daily living): eating, bathing, dressing, and getting in and out of bed, just to name a few (upon availability).
- Attendants have no special training other than skills they made need to do transfers and to assist residents with daily living tasks.
- Emergency Assistance: At least one Attendant is on duty 24/7 to give emergency assistance to disabled residents any time during the day or night.
- A resident may choose to contract with the IILC Manager to utilize these services on a regular basis and scheduled in advance (upon availability).
- A resident may also request non-contractual, random assistance (upon availability).
- Resident is responsible for his/her own financial responsibilities, not only for the cost of their condo or apartment, but also for their attendant care and daily living.
- PAs do not provide Custodial care (responsibility for residents' health and physical well being).
